    Re: customising workspace

I know that may be confusing if you are new to Linux but GNOME is not a window manager but a desktop environment (a window manager is only one part of that)

    Window managers are:
    • Metacity (default wm in GNOME)
    • Kwin (default wm in KDE)
    • Xfwm (default wm in Xfce)
    • Compiz
    • Openbox
    • many more...

Alright, one last question: did you change any Compiz settings already?
E.g. did you enable the cube -- or are you still on Ubuntu's stock options?

    Re: customising workspace

By default, you change workspace with compiz by pressing alt+ctrl+left/right arrow.

You can change the keys in compis wall settings(or cube if you use the 3d cube, etc).
