    Atheros Wireless doesn't work

Laptop MSI VR610x, AMD64, currently running on XP.
I'm tying to switch to Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64, but there is a problem with Atheros Wireless Card recognition. In System-Preferences-Hardware is not listed at all. While running Hardware Test it is recognized as Atheros AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter, while it is Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter. In the Hardware Drivers it is enabled and in use but doesn't work. I've tried looking for something like Device Manager or any other application that would let me update or change driver, obviously I failed to find one.
As Atheros is false (or not?) recognized so Realtek is. Instead of being recognized as Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethenet NIC, it's listed as Realtek RTL8101E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller.
I am new to Linux but my computer skills are above average. Somehow I can't the way out. I started exploring an e-book Addison.Wesley.Moving.to.Ubuntu.Linux.Aug.2006, but it mentions solving the problems in Device Manager which couldn't be found in Ubuntu 8.04.
How do I deal with those kind of problems?
