Check your keyboard layout in System->Preferences->Keyboard

If a UK keyboard was selected at the time of installation then maybe your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has got corrupted.

Mine (Dapper - 6.06) has the following section in it:
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "CoreKeyboard"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
    EndSection
Suggest check your xorg.conf and edit if necessary. Then restart X.
