    mounting problem

    Hi,

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Desktop, 32 bit) some days ago, am very lucky with it, but have some minor problems. This is one of it:

I mounted a ntfs partition /dev/sdc1 on /media/Medien_WD500 and it worked fine. sdc1 has previously been mounted as "/media/Medien (WD500)", but I discovered difficulties with the blanks when trying to put into the fstab, so I gave it a new mounting point name.

Then I put this line into the fstab:
    -------------
    /dev/sdc1 /media/Medien_WD500 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=de_DE.UTF-8 0 0
    --------------

After rebooting, the device is accessible as "/media/Medien (WD500)_". I have no idea where the underscore comes from.

However, sdc1 can't be mounted as Medien_WD500. Trying to mount it manually with "sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/Medien_WD500" does not work: "mount: Einhängepunkt /media/Medien_WD500 existiert nicht" ("mounting point ... does not exist").

Trying to mkdir /media/Medien_WD500 fails also: "mkdir: kann Verzeichnis „/media/Medien_WD500“ nicht anlegen: File exists" (cannot create folder ...: file exists).

Fact is, the file does not exist (checked it with sudo nautilus).

Any ideas about this strange behaviour?

    Many thanks in advance!!
    Benjamin

    BTW, here's my fstab:
    ------------------------------------------
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # -- This file has been automaticly generated by ntfs-config --
    #

What about when you do an ls in the /media folder? What do you see?
I do not use Ubuntu any more, nor have I ever used Gnome. Therefore, I tend to give advice that is distro- and DE-agnostic, which, while perhaps not the easiest way, will allow you to move freely between machines.

Does not work also, same error message ("file exists").

Fancy Colors! I underestimated the graphical qualities of bash

    System response:
ls: Zugriff auf Medien_WD500 nicht möglich: Input/output error
cdrom Eigene Dateien Material Medien (WD 500)_
    cdrom0 floppy Medien\040(WD\040500) Medien_WD500
    Eigene\040Dateien floppy0 Medien (WD 500) tmp

    (translates as:
ls: Access to Medien_WD500 not possible: ...
green characters are black with green background in bash)

After reboot, the "??????" are gone and everything works! How comes? I have no idea!

    Anyway, thanks for helping me!
