Using my TV as my monitor

This seems like it should be pretty simple, but I am really new at this and for the life of me I can't find any info on it.

I have a dvi>hdmi cable connecting my computer to my hdtv. I would love to use the tv as my main monitor (I don't really care about having two monitors), but I don't know how to do this.

I would love anyone that can help.

Okay so here's what I just did. Kinda fixed the problem above, also made things worse.

I used "gksudo displayconfig-gtk" to open up Screens and Graphics, I was able to allow my tv to function as my monitor, but I now have everything set to a screen resolution I don't like, AND what's worse is that every time I try to open Screens and Graphics now it gives me a crash report.

    Ah!

I tried to reinstall Ubuntu but no dice. I can't reinstall because whenever I put in the install cd and go to "Install" the screen turns into green and blue lines.

I will bake a pie to anyone who can help me here!

I just want Screens and Graphics to work again!

You have to disconnect TV and use DVI to monitor.
Are you using Geforce, Ati ???
