every time i install stuff i always have a hard time knowing where its been installed. is t here anything i can use to tell me where did ubuntu install my stuff?

Well where are you installing it from?
And usually it goes somewhere like /usr/bin though I'm not 100% sure myself
i used synaptic to instal wikimedia and installs seems successful but where is it?
Is it not in your applications menu anywhere?
If it (I'm not familiar with that program) is not in your menu then the next thing I try is just typing it into the terminal or alt-f2 window. Alot of times if they didn't include a menu entry then they will put the command in the path so you can type it in from pretty much anywhere and it'll start.
And if you want to find it on your filesystem, just type 'locate wikimedia' at the command line.
