    No. This is the first thing I checked.
    Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

    I re-ran the "sudo chown -R yourusername /media/disk" command after rebooting and it works now.

    It could have been a problem of inappropriate unmounting - either from window$ or Ubuntu...
    Anyway, I' m glad!
