This might seem like a silly question but I've seen a few threads where every now and then someone posts the word "bump" and that's all.
What does bump mean?

I think it means to bump the thread back up to the top of the list. If nobody answers you then after a while your post vanishes into the pit of oblivion on page 2.

*bump*
(I'm so sorry...I couldn't resist)
Everyone can do it. When you post in a thread, the thread is "bumped" back up to the top. Writing the word "bump" is just a way to let everyone know that you're only doing it so that your thread is at the top, and ergo, will recieve more view and/or replies.
However, it is not encouraged to bump too often. Don't post a thread, and then bump it every 15 minutes just to keep it at the top. Not even every hour. Give it time, or you'll be frowned upon.
If you have the insatiable need to bump, there's an official bump thread somewhere around here. Try to find it and bump your heart out.
EDIT: Found it. Go practice your bumping skillz: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=520091

Programming is an art. Learn it. Live it. Love it.
bump --> bring up my post
When you reply to a thread, you bring it to the top of the thread listing. This way, it will get more attention. People "bump" their threads when they have nothing to add to them, but just want to get them to the top of the thread listing. It is encouraged not to bump to often; about once every 24 hours
If you ask that again you will find out!
It is just so the post moves back to the top in its category so someone is more likely to reply to it
Hmmm...
Now, if only this forum had a "sage" button...

I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me.
If you bump less than 24 hours after you post, you can get an infraction.
