I downloaded and tried to compile rtl8187b-modified-dist.tar.gz and I got the same errors as you; I did not research why. I also downloaded rtl8187b-modified-jadams-2-1-2008.tar.gz and I got it compiled with warnings but no errors. I suggest you send your rtl8187-modified to Trash and get the jadams version. I also noticed that once you cd to the proper directory to get started, that makedrv is not marked as executable, so you have to:Then you can simply:Code:sudo chmod +x makedrvThen continue with the instructions in the README. Post back if you get stuck.Code:sudo ./makedrv
Now for a bit of a rant: in all these tar.gz files, there are instructions as to how to unpack them in the README which you can only read after you unpack them! Crazy, isn't it? However, once you have the file in your /home/username directory, you can right-click the file and select 'Extract Here' avoiding the untar mystery: let me see, was that 'tar -zxvf or tar -xyz or tar -wtflake?
End rant.

I will try this asap, and get back to you if it does work. Thank you for your help.
Hello everyone,
My wifi was working just fine using pjasnos' method (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...light=rtl8187b)
Also listed below -
wget http://www.datanorth.net/~cuervo/rtl...ed-dist.tar.gz
wget http://www.datanorth.net/~cuervo/rtl8187b/2.6.24.patch
tar -xzvf rtl8187b-modified-dist.tar.gz
cp 2.6.24.patch rtl8187b-modified/
cd rtl8187b-modified
patch -p1 < 2.6.24.patch
./makedrv
sudo ./wlan0up
until I installed the updates that GNOME recommended I download and install earlier today. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 64bit desktop edition. Now I am getting some of the same errors you all have mentioned -
notavailable@CENSORED:~$ cd rtl8187b-modified
notavailable@CENSORED:~/rtl8187b-modified$ sudo ./wlan0up
insmod: can't read 'ieee80211_crypt-rtl.ko': No such file or directory
insmod: can't read 'ieee80211_crypt_wep-rtl.ko': No such file or directory
insmod: can't read 'ieee80211_crypt_tkip-rtl.ko': No such file or directory
insmod: can't read 'ieee80211_crypt_ccmp-rtl.ko': No such file or directory
insmod: can't read 'ieee80211-rtl.ko': No such file or directory
insmod: can't read 'r8187.ko': No such file or directory
notavailable@CENSORED:~/rtl8187b-modified$ dir
2.6.24.patch install ReadMe.txt wlan0dhcp wlan0up
ieee80211 makedrv release_note wlan0down wpa_supplicant-0.5.3
ifcfg-wlan0 README.FIRST rtl8187 wlan0rmv
notavailable@CENSORED:~/rtl8187b-modified$
Now I am going to see if I can set up rtl8187b-modified-jadams-2-1-2008.tar.gz from http://www.datanorth.net/~cuervo/rtl8187b/
Cheers!
oK,
I tried to use jadams file, but that did not work for me.
After the new update from Ubuntu yesterday it altered my patch file . So, I had to do
cp 2.6.24.patch rtl8187b-modified/
cd rtl8187b-modified
patch -p1 < 2.6.24.patch
./makedrv
sudo ./wlan0up
again. Now it is online.
Hi Rookie,
I tried the same but it says "patch: command not found"
Am i missing something else?
cheers
