[SOLVED] installation bork

i was installing a deb package and something crashed making it unable to finish. now with synaptic i get the error message
E: The package virtualbox needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.
i have ran dpkg --configure -a, dpkg -i virtualbox.deb
if i try to reinstall the package it tells me that could not open virtualbox.deb and that the package may be corrupted or i dont have the right permissions, which i should because ive been using sudo. anyone know what to do?
