It might be easier to have you post the results of the following and then we can see what we need to get it to work on reboot:
    Code:
    grep -i -e b43 -e b44 -e bcm43xx -e ssb -e ndiswrapper /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
    [/QUOTE]

I didn't fix anything since the last reboot and here are the results:

    # replaced by b43 and ssb.
    blacklist bcm43xx
    blacklist bcm43xx
    blacklist b43
    blacklist ssb

After the modules one it showed only "ndiswrapper"

    After the network one:
    *-network
    description: Network controller
    product: BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI
    vendor: Broadcom Corporation
    physical id: 0
    bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
    version: 01
    width: 32 bits
    clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
    configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0 module=ssb

    Thank you for your help.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, and if not just ignore. Under system>administration>windows wireless drivers there is currently installed a bcmwl5 driver with hardware present. I don't see bcmwl5 listed on the blacklist. But then I'm a total n00b so, my thinking may not be correct. Should it also be blacklisted? should I remove it? or is this totally irrelevant?

    Thanks again.

The windows wireless drivers is the driver that is used for NDISwrapper. So this driver does not get noticed by the kernel and is not used. The driver here is "wrapped" into ndiswrapper. If it says that the hardware is present, it means that ndiswrapper is happy with that driver.

The only driver that I am not for sure about is b44. This is a Broadcom driver for wired ethernet cards. If you have a b44 card, when you type:
    Code:
    lspci -nn|grep 14e4
, it will come up with two items. If it only shows your 4311 card, then you most likely don't have the b44 driver.

To try out something different, we are going to create a new file to just blacklist the b43 module:
    Code:
    echo blacklist b43|sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/b43
    echo blacklist ssb|sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/b43
In theory, this file will be checked every time the b43 module is being requested for loading. If this file exists, it will read the file and do what it says. Since it says to blacklist it, it should prevent the b43 module from loading.

Everything seems to be working ok (blue light), except that I can't log on. The signal strength is reasonably strong, (about 1/3 of the bar) but I can't log on. I've tried different settings for the wireless, but still can't log on. I'm not sure what's wrong.

I had the same issue, are you using 128 bit wep by any chance?

It seems the network manager fails to correctly configure in case of a 128 bit wep key on some systems:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ols/+bug/67876

    try this:
    Code:
    sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
    sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid yourwirelessnetworkname
    sudo iwconfig wlan0 channel yourwirelessnetworkchannel
    sudo iwconfig wlan0 key yourwepkey
    then:
    Code:
    sudo dhclient wlan0
if you get something like this:

We did manage to connect to a neighbor's unsecure network, but cannot connect to my own network with the Ubuntu 8.04, but can with the windows laptop.

I don't know understand the whole loading and unloading of modules, so I don't know how to unload the ssb.
