Applet Errors on Startup - Missing icons (8.04)

I'm getting applet errors asking me if I want to delete or not delete the applets in the taskbar (things like user-switching, battery status ect)

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_BattstatApplet"
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet".

I thought it was compiz (water effects problem) but then disabled compiz and still get the errors

not sure if this matters but here is my specs
