    $ sudo nvidia-xconfig -d 24 --allow-glx-with-composite --add-argb-glx-visuals
    (in that order)

Re: Troubles wiht nvidia drivers on 8.04

Let me guess; now glxinfo says "Direct rendering: yes", lshw -C video says "driver=nvidia" down at the bottom, you get decent framerate in glxgears, and compiz --replace doesn't even mention Nvidia?

=> Everything right, Compiz doesn't realize it. Perhaps if you somehow forced it to use Nvidia by altering the wrapper script (/usr/bin/compiz)

No, that's messed up something fierce. It doesn't make any sense; I've seen plenty of threads where Nvidia drivers are set up perfectly yet Compiz still refuses them.

Could you post your new xorg.conf file then, please? Last attempt before I succumb.

They way this functions has changed in 8.04 ,it no longer goes into display options (in recovery menu, anyway) but it does go thru kybd, mouse etc

    edit:
like bootpc ,hit "esc" at grb menu ,select recovery kernel ,at GUI drop to root prompt
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
go through menu's kebd ,langauge ,mouse ,whatever and then in 7.10 it would go into display configs ,not now it seems? The thing that strikes me as odd is that i would have expected a "recovery boot" to have a failsafe/fallback display config? unless i missed something.

    edit2:

    just found this:

"UPDATE: This method does not work with Hardy Heron and probably all versions to follow (including Intrepid Ibex). This method seems to ONLY work with Gutsy Gibbon and older.
I think this is because the newer versions of xserver-xorg rely more on auto-detecting the configuration during runtime rather than looking at xorg.conf.
    /UPDATE"

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=690760

looks like the auto-detecting needs a little more work?

    Xorg.conf:
    Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
    # values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
    #
    # You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
    # For example:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Try that; I managed to get it working, but it took a while for me to figure out how, lol.

Just do a search for 'nvidia' in the Package Manager.
