    [SOLVED] Interesting Desktop Effect problem

    Hello there. I recent reformatted and reinstalled Ubuntu Hardy on my machine and all worked great. I recently however decided to disable my desktop effects and found out I missed them so I went to re-enable and the screen flickers, then flashes a message saying "Desktop Effect could not be enabled." This confused me as they were enabled.

    The odd thing to me here is that it seems to go without any errors but obviously I get no effects. I have a nVidia 8800 GTS video card and I recently reinstalled the drivers as a attempt to troubleshoot my issue. Also, as a reminder, the effects were working quite fine before I disabled them.

    Have you tried adding the --replace argument? I'm not sure if it makes a difference.

    Tried the following:

    Removed nvidia drivers, reinstalled.
    Removed compiz, reinstalled.

    Problem Solved!

    Ran the following command to disable metacity composite effects:

    gconftool-2 -s --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false

    And it worked.
