Many thanks to dougvan for the workaround. Once I got into my session, my ethernet adapter was up and I could patch my system to fix it for good via:

    Code:
    sudo aptitude update
    sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Now all is well. Had the problem with a Corsair Voyager 8GB stick.

Re: blank screen at first login after install

    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg has changed in 8.04:

    2 try this:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is not the same anymore, now you can install your keybord and more with this.
But your videocard and monitor goes like this,
    start in safe mode,
choose the last options with the x,
Here ubuntu will search and identify your monitor and videocard, so you have all your posssible settings.
Then reboot and install your videcard driver.(i use envy for this).

Question Re: blank screen at first login after install

Hi, I have this same problem after upgrading to HH: login is fine, but only get orange screen and movable cursor afterwards. However, i can't get a terminal to open from my blank desktop. I do atl-F2, ctrl-atl-F2, and all sorts of other permuations of alt, ctrl, f1 and f2 without any success. Any suggestions?
