Unhappy Hardy Heron upgrade + dvd playback issues

Hi all, I'm starting a new thread as I have spent countless hours searching the forum. My problem is that I can't play DVD's anymore after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. All my DVD's worked fine in Gutsy (started automagicaly). They also play in WinXP (I have dual boot).

Now, before you start telling me to install liblibdvdcss2, libdvdread3 libxine1-ffmpeg and so on; I have gone through ALL the stickys with no luck so far.

CD's and normal data DVD's open fine when inserted, comercial DVD's do not.

When I try to play a dvd wih gxine I get the following errors:
-The xine engine failed to start, no input plugin was found.
    -read error from /dev/dvd

I thought that maybe it had something to do with my region so I installed regionset, but just got this message:

"regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
ERROR: Could not open disc "(null)"!
Please ensure there is a readable CD or DVD in the drive."

    Totem gives the following message:
"Totem was not able to this disc: Please check that a disc is present in the drive."

    VLC gives the following:

    VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/scd0 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/scd0 for reading
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD
[00000294] dvdread demuxer error: DVDRead cannot open source: /dev/scd0
[00000297] vcd access error: no movie tracks found
[00000297] access_file access error: file /dev/scd0 is empty, aborting
[00000304] main private error: cannot pre fill buffer
[00000307] cdda access error: could not read block 0 from disc
[00000307] cdda access error: cannot read sector 0
[00000307] cdda access error: could not read block 1 from disc
[00000307] cdda access error: cannot read sector 1
[00000307] cdda access error: could not read block 2 from disc
[00000307] cdda access error: cannot read sector 2
[00000307] cdda access error: could not read block 3 from disc
[00000307] cdda access error: cannot read sector 3
[00000307] cdda access error: could not read block 4 from disc
[00000307] cdda access error: cannot read sector 4

Any help on how to resovle would be greatly appreciated. I'm starting to loose faith here.

    Thank you!

EDIT: When I tried installing libdvdnav3 I got an error saying "E: Couldn't find package libdvdnav3"
