Unable to install from repositories since Heron upgrade

I upgraded to Hardy Heron last night and everything went well.

Now though, when I try to install _any_ application from the Add/Remove programs menu, I get this error:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libhiglayout-java_1.0-2ubuntu1_all.deb: files list file for package `transmission-common' is missing final newline

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks!

    edit:

    more detailed error

    Do:-
    Code:
    sudo apt-get clean
    and then:-
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install -f
    followed by:-
    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
See if the error persists after it is done.
Think carefully before executing commands containing "rm", especially "sudo rm -rf ", if you require more information concerning this matter, read this.

It might be worth checking your ram for any failures. Reboot then at grub it should give you an option to do a memtest.

Re: Unable to install from repositories since Heron upgrade

    more detail:

    sudo apt-get clean

    returns no result.

    sudo apt-get install -f

    returns:
    Code:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
      libglib1.2ldbl libstdc++5 gnome-bin libgtk1.2 libgnome32 gnome-libs-data
      libart2 libgnorbagtk0 gdk-imlib1 python-qt3 libsdl-ttf2.0-0 libgif4
      python-sip4 libgnomeui32 libxml1 libdb3 libgtk1.2-common imlib-base
      python-setuptools liborbit0 gdk-imlib11 python-pkg-resources
      libgnomesupport0 gcc-3.3-base libgnorba27 libsmpeg0 libungif4g
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
    sudo dpkg --configure -a

    returns no result

if, as apt-get install -f suggests, I run apt-get autoremove, this happens:
    Code:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
      libglib1.2ldbl libstdc++5 gnome-bin libgtk1.2 libgnome32 gnome-libs-data

      python-sip4 libgnomeui32 libxml1 libdb3 libgtk1.2-common imlib-base
      python-setuptools liborbit0 gdk-imlib11 python-pkg-resources
      libgnomesupport0 gcc-3.3-base libgnorba27 libsmpeg0 libungif4g
The following packages will be REMOVED
      gcc-3.3-base gdk-imlib1 gdk-imlib11 gnome-bin gnome-libs-data imlib-base
      libart2 libdb3 libgif4 libglib1.2ldbl libgnome32 libgnomesupport0

Could you post the output of:-
    Code:
    cat /var/lib/dpkg/available | grep transmission-common
