well i do my best unfortunately linux disagrees.
I also have an Asus mobo and 2 SATA drives using a single core AMD 64 3200+ cpu. The only time my system freezes is if I plug in the USB cable from my UPS that reports the state of its battery. With that in, it can freeze anywhere from 5 mins to a day. Without it, the system has stayed totally stable. I am running 32 bit Hardy, upgraded from....see my sig below, upgraded a lot.
Anyway, I have noticed that xorg.conf has been rewritten a lot for Hardy. Things that used to be in one section are moved to others now. I have included the relevant portions ( I have omitted keyboard, mouse, wacom, etc.) of my xorg.conf file I am using nvidia video and have compiz turned on without problems.
Notice that a lot of options that used to be in Section "Device" are now in Section "Screen".Code:Section "Module" Load "bitmap" Load "ddc" Load "extmod" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "int10" Load "type1" Load "vbe" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "VX2235wm" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Generic Video Card" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Generic Video Card" Monitor "VX2235wm" DefaultDepth 24 Option "UseFBDev" "true" Option "NvAgp" "2" Option "RenderAccel" "True" Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" SubSection "Display" Depth 1 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x1440" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x640" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 4 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x1440" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x640" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x1440" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x640" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x1440" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x640" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x1440" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x640" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1680x1050" "1600x1200" "1440x1440" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x640" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection
There is no mention of DRI anywhere in the file.
Also, notice the AGP mode command for an Nvidia card at least is "NvAgp" "2" rather than "AGPMode = 2"
Hope this helps someone.

Using Ubuntu since Warty Warthog (4.10)
32 bit 5.04>5.10>6.06>6.10>7.04>7.10>8.04>8.10>9.04>9.10
64 bit 9.10 upgraded to 10.04>10.10>11.04>11.10>12.04>14.04
I ran into this bug that describes boot failures when searching for a solution to my problem. Try switching off DRI in xorg.conf:
If that fixes it, then it is likely an AGPMode problem as described in the last post in that bug.Code:Section "Module" . . . Disable "dri" EndSection
finally got somehting i left the house and left it in TERMINAl and got
can someone decipher this for meCode:[21731.773035] Call Trace: [21731.773061] [<f888b75c>] ehci_urb_done+0x5c/0xb0 [ehci_hcd] [21731.773084] [<f888c53f>] qh_completions+0x24f/0x430 [echi_hcd] [21731.773109] [<f888d0ae> ehci_work+0x51e/0x810 [ehci_hcd] [21731.773132] [<c031b438>] mutex_lock+0x8/0x20 [21731.773149] [<c01bc2c2>] inotify_inode_queue_event+0x4a/0xf0 Then some more numbers with ehci_irq+0x158/0x1c0 [ehci_hcd] Usb_hcd_irq+0x2b/0x60 [usbcore] Handle_irq_event+0x30/0x60 Handle_level_irq+0x7c/0xf0 Do_irq+0x3b/0x70 Sys_read+0x41/0x70 Common_interupt+0x23/0x30 Code: c6 8b f8 8b 74 24 04 83 c4 08 e9 79 dd a7 c7 89 f6 8d bc 27 00 00 00 00 53 b8 6c c6 8b f8 89 d3 e8 12 dc a7 c7 8b 43 18 8b 53 14 <89> 42 04 89 10 8d 43 14 89 43 14 89 43 18 b8 01 00 00 00 86 05 EIP: [<f889e793>] usb_hcd_unlink_urb_from_ep+0x13/0x30 [usbcore] SS: ESP 0068:f45ede84 Kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt
That might be worth posting in a bug report.

Does someone have a solution for this random lockups???
It's been months now..
I've said it before and I'll say it again: there are probably many bugs at work here. There isn't going to be a one-size-fits-all fix.
The best thing to do at this point is either search launchpad for a bug that matches your symptoms and add a "me too" post or file a new report yourself.
Intrepid Ibex Alpha is available for testing as well.
Just a heads up.
I did reinstall Dapper. Wow! It was so sweet and easy.
Not to be contentious: I'm sorry, but posting a bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu isn't going to suffice Mighty Joe. What about us poor slobs that are on 24 baud rate dialup? We are unable to do the testing etc. Posting is important I agree but nothing is flowing down stream to us from there as far as an explaination and that does need to happen.
As far as there being multiple bugs, I tend to disagree. Sudden multiple problems from a new release just smacks of a single big problem.
Watching and waiting... the grateful ox.

Let's be contentious. Liven up this thread a bit
Dialup!?!? You poor guy.
Seriously, tho, posting a bug in launchpad doesn't take any more bandwidth than posting here. While you probably can't download each Live CD you can still contribute. The dev's don't follow the forums. They do follow launchpad.
I used to think Hardy Hangs were one big bug, but experience has proven me wrong.
You tried my fix here and it didn't work for you. I've been using Hardy for a week and haven't seen a hang. I think that points to two different problems.
