Cool Solid brown desktop after logging in (8.04)

After a fresh install of hardy 8.04 i386 on my laptop, gnome doesn't appear to work at all.

GDM loads as usual, but when I log in, I only get a solid "ubuntu"-brown backround. I can't right-click or anything. I can only use Ctrl+Alt+backspace to get back to gdm.

I installed fluxbox via the commandline, and that works perfectly. And I tried rm -rf .* in my homedir, to no effect.

    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem with my Thinkpad T40. Don't know what to do.

Thank god I'm not the only one...
    I use a Thinkpad X40, maybe there's a connection?

I just did a complete reinstall, same problem...

    Has anyone else experienced this?
