    You're right but most of the users use the kernels that come with Ubuntu by default. Therefore I prefer not to change it (I might add a warning though)

    However if you read point 2 of the PROBLEMS SECTION (which I doubt someone has ever read it ) you will find the solution to any gcc version mismatch.

    C'mon give us some credit I actually printed the guide, read it and kept it handy in case I borked something

    Just thought I'd mention that I performed Method #1 above and all seemed to go well until I restarted X, or tried to...
    I can't recall the errors exactly, but it had something to do with no being able to use any of the resolutions or something like that.
    Well, I was at a friends house trying to get him going on his new Ubuntu, and this happened.
    I came home, hooked the box back up to my keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and voila, X came up just fine (Gnome).
    Hmmm...
    Well, obviously it must have something to do with the fact that I'm using an LCD monitor, relatively new, and he had an old clunker crt.
    So searching the web yielded the following command for reconfiguring X:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver.xorg
    I ran this (while still connected to my LCD) and answered as generically (thinking clunker crt and *simple* the whole time) as possible.
    X came up again, but I still don't know if it will on his system.
    Next step, go back to his place and try the command above while connected to his monitor.
    Or, get the info for his monitor and plug it in here...
    I'll probably go with the first one.

    Yes, that's part of the fun .

    Make sure you use nvidia legacy drivers and nvidia legacy restricted modules for that card.

    Exclamation NVIDIA 1920x1200 errors

    Howdy,

    I've been getting errors using the nvidia driver for 1920x1200 on my 6800 ultra.
    The nv driver works great but the nvidia driver from apt does not.

    I should point out this diff:
    < (II) NVIDIA(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 165.00 MHz

    So it appears that the nvidia driver's clock range is off.

    Any help would be most appreciated. I seem to recall hearing about a bug in the driver but don't know for certain.

    1) Add the option in red to your xorg.conf and set the driver to nvidia:

    Save the file and log out and press CTRL+ALT+Backspace.

    2) IF that didn't work then I need you to reproduce the error.

    Set the nvidia driver in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or if it's already set leave it as it is.
    When GDM (or kdm) crashes at startup Press CTRL+ALT+F1
    Then type

    Then:

    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (if you use GDM)
    Code:
    startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5
    You will get the same error.

    sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log
    (Of course you have to replace "your_username" with your username)

    and post the content of that file (which you can find under /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log )


    BTW if you want to access the GNOME or KDE again you can use this quick fix:

    Set the driver back to "nv" instead of "nvidia"
    CTRL+O to save
    CTRL+X to exit

    I have a 6800GT and I'm using kubuntu. I don't understand what " In the left window of the menu editor choose System Tools, then click the New Entry button." means though. Could someone tell me how to do this part in kubuntu please. I'm hoping its ok to ask kubuntu questions in this forum I don't really know.
