A preset is failing to load on your system. My code throws an unhandled exception in that case. I will improve the error handling. Do you know what preset it is trying to load up? Is the path valid?

Is there any way to make it faster? It slows my system to a crawl and runs at ~5fps.

I'm running this on pretty weak hardware (Intel 945GM) but Milkdrop worked very fast in Winamp back then where I had that running at full 1280x1024

Does ProjectM add more advanced cycle eating stuff that I can turn off?

What settings do you have in the projectm preferences panel? Are you running compiz at the same time?

What's the command for that? The howto mentions that it's in "settings/configure projectM" but it doesn't seem to exist on my system.

I used checkinstall, would this have caused it?

I had problems using checkinstall with projectm but I doubt that would cause performance issues. To get the settings screen up, launch projectm-pulseaudio and press m to bring up the menu. Settings/configure projectm should be there now.

Hmm shouldn't be slow with those settings on that video card, are you sure you aren't running compiz at the same time?

Re: Howto: Install and use projectM music visualizer with pulseaudio support on Hard

I am definitely not using Compiz.

The speed becomes acceptable when I reduce the size of the window to thumbnail size.

It is really slow still when I reduced the values of texture size=8, and halved the mesh size values. In fact I would say it's the exact same speed. I have no idea what's going on, I can play 3d games fine on this machine, why is this slow?

When it starts up it prints:

    Code:
    dir:/usr/share/projectM/config.inp
    reading ~/.projectM/config.inp
    configFile: /home/andrew/.projectM/config.inp
    MAX SAMPLES:2048
    load config END
    unconnected: connecting...
    connectHelper: "alsa_output.pci_8086_27d8_sound_card_0_alsa_playback_0.monitor"
I don't like the look of that 2048. Can that be reduced?
