Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

I'm running xubuntu 10.04lts on a very old acer laptop. I have an external monitor connected but the system only sees one display. My vga card is ATI 3D Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2x. Is there a way to get the external display recognized separately without building the mach64 driver? I don't need 3D acceleration.

Any help would be much appreciated.

There might be a button on your keyboard that does this. For mine, I have to press the blue-type "Fn" button and F8 at the same time; below F8 I can read the blue words "CRT/LCD".
You shouldn't have to build the driver from source. Open Source drivers come preinstalled.

I can flip between displays with Fn-F5 but the system only sees one display. xrandr gives this:

    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
    default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
    800x600 63.0* 61.0 59.0
    640x480 63.0 62.0 61.0
    720x400 60.0
    640x400 60.0
    640x350 57.0
    512x384 65.0
    400x300 63.0 61.0 59.0
    320x240 63.0 62.0 61.0
    360x200 60.0
    320x200 61.0
    320x175 57.0
During boot there is a message that says something like "WMI module not supported, unable to load"

I'm stuck with 800x600 even though the vga output can give higher resolution.

    hello!

i've got an old Fujitsu LifeBook on my hands. i installed Lubuntu 12.04 on it and tried glxgears which gave me about 10 FPS. should i follow this howto to improve the graphics card performance or that's all i can expect from this hardware?

    $ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64)
    thank you!

The drivers are now built in to Ubuntu and offer the bet possible performance.

thanks for the reply, but i'm not so sure this performance is the best possible, as the same glxgears on Wary Puppy gave me 100-110 FPS on the same machine with the same resolution, albeit the depth was 16 instead of 24, even in the Live CD mode. can anyone explain that, please?
