It`s work for my ati rage Mobility mach64 too, thanks for your modification of agpart .
First I`ve got the problem when installing the dri : I got this message Syntax error: Bad fd number, but after browse the web for a while I found the
clue at:http://diveintomark.org/archives/200.../bad-fd-number , about what is the different in Edgy Eft

so the sh at the begining of command should be changed with bash.example..
    usr:~$ bash install.sh

    thanks alots

    Hello

I did everything, and it works (Thank You VeRy MuCh), I mean direct rendering, but what does "libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b" mean?

    Hi,

i solved my problem, not being able to compile the mach64 package by installing a 686 kernel on my Duron mobile and moving the installation files from a fat32 to an ext3-partition. Installing from ext3 probably was the primary solution , because my dri.log said, that it could not create a symbolic link.

Now drm and mach64 seem to load perfectly, but i still get a black screen, when loading gdm. My xorg.conf is set up properly (dri, glx 16bit).
Also my Xorg.0.log says direct rendering enabled but that doesn't really help me without visible screen.

    Here is the output of

    lsmod | grep mach64
    mach64 56032 0
    drm 81240 1 mach64
    lsmod | grep agp
    via_agp 10272 1
    agpgart 36784 2 drm,via_agp
    dmesg | grep drm
    [4294696.030000] [drm] Initialized drm 1.0.1 20051102

    dmesg | grep mach64
    [4294696.096000] [drm] Initialized mach64 1.0.0 20020904 on minor 0:

    Here is my xorg.conf:

    xorg.conf.txt

    And here my Xorg.0.log:

    Xorg.0.log.zip

    Someone can help me ?

Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

hi everyone, i've an old laptop Dell L400 with a mach64 onboard with 4MB of ram

the main problem is that i wish make the direct rendering work at 1024x768, but trying i get that:

    grep WW /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    Code:
(WW) ATI(0): DRI static buffer allocation failed -- need at least 4608 kB video memory
    as explained on DriTroubleshooting page
    Code:
If so, reduce your resolution or color depth. The video ram necessary for a given resolution/depth is width*height*(depth/8)*3 kilobytes. (The 3 is for front, back, and depth buffers).
when i get the Warning, Xorg reverts to software rendering, and launches himself @ 1024x768 WITHOUT drm
the only way i succeeded to run direct rendering with the above HOWTO is @ 800x600

so the main problem is 1024*768*3*1 = more than mine 4MBs of onboard ram!

that means i will never get the direct rendering with a resolution of 1024x768 (that's also the "default" lcd resolution....)?

and if your a noob, make sure your sober!
    and use the modified ati_pcigart.c
it works! took 2 hs to compile everything on my old beater comp.
wow this video card is from 1998...

No direct rendering, but i think thats becasue 4 of the 8 megs on my card are broken.. well im not turning the rez down....

Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

    I have self-compiled kernel 2.6.18 and Xorg 7.1.1.
Installed everything like in 1st post.

Now when i start X-server, it writes to log:

    (II) Module ati: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
    compiled for 7.0.0, module version = 6.5.7
    Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.8
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
    (II) UnloadModule: "ati"
    (II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ati_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

does somebody know how to fix this?

I just want to say thank you, the hacked Edgy version of the HOWTO worked splendidly! I can't thank you enough! My glxgears FPS went from ~80fps to ~160fps!

    HeyHo,

    little feedback.
It works also with a Compaq EVO N400c with Edgy Eft Kernel 2.6.17-10 and the hacked Version.
    Thanks for your work .

Now the next, did anyone of you makes a 3D Desktop to run with the Rage Mobility P/M ?

    greetings

    Nice How-to

This thread has been added to the UDSF wiki.
