Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

in step 6. I have this problem. I have ubuntu fesity with 7.1 xorg

checking for XORG... configure: error: Package requirements (xorg-server >= 1.3 xproto fontsproto xineramaproto randrproto renderproto videoproto xf86miscproto xextproto) were not met:

    Requested 'xorg-server >= 1.3' but version of xorg-server is 1.2.0

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XORG_CFLAGS
and XORG_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

    I DONT KNOW why talk about xorg-server 1.2. I have 7.1 xorg.
    How I could fix it!??

    Thank's

Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

    Hi there

In my laptop get the following line from lspci:
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage LT Pro AGP-133 (rev dc)

After three days work and testing i have functioning solution for Ubuntu feisty on my laptop with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic:

    You needs three things:
    1. Install xserver-xorg-video-ati backported from gutsy (compiled with --enable-dri)
    2. Install xserver-xfree-core backported from gutsy (depended from xserver-xorg-video-ati)
    both are deb-packages from http://www.bakarasse.de

    3. Download kernel modules drm.ko and mach64.ko from http://www.bakarasse.de/linux/ubuntu/download.
Modules are compiled from drm sources freedesktop.org (step 8 from
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...&postcount=102)

To use the packages add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list
    Code:
    deb http://www.bakarasse.de/linux/ubuntu/feisty-backports ./
You will also need to add my key to your list of trusted keys:
    Code:
    wget http://www.bakarasse.de/PublicKey.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
    Install the packages:
    Code:
    apt-get update
    apt-get upgrade -u
Download, unpack and copy the kernel modules to /lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
    Code:
    wget http://www.bakarasse.de/linux/ubuntu/download/mach64-2.6.20-16-generic.tar.gz
    tar xzvf mach64-2.6.20-16-generic.tar.gz
    (sudo) cp -iv 2.6.20-16-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/*.ko /lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
    after
    Code:
    (sudo) depmod -a
    restart the X-Server.

On my now fresh installed Feisty on other partition works that at once:
    Code:
    alex@max:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try running with LIBGL_THROTTLE_REFRESH and LIBL_SYNC_REFRESH unset.
    direct rendering: Yes

    alex@max:/tmp$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -A5 -B5 Direct
    (II) ATI(0): [DRI] installation complete
(II) ATI(0): [drm] Added 128 16384 byte DMA buffers
(II) ATI(0): [drm] Mapped 128 DMA buffers at 0xb67dd000
(EE) ATI(0): [drm] Couldn't find IRQ for bus id 1:0:0
(II) ATI(0): [drm] Falling back to irq-free operation
    (II) ATI(0): Direct rendering enabled
    (==) RandR enabled
    (II) Initializing built-in extension MIT-SHM
    (II) Initializing built-in extension XInputExtension
    (II) Initializing built-in extension XTEST
    (II) Initializing built-in extension XKEYBOARD
    glxgears and openGL-screensavers work.

    IRQ-Problem remains unsolved,
set it in BIOS on my laptop is not possible.

    Very nce, Alex.

Installs and works flawless on our Compaq Evo n400c/n410c Notebooks also (Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x), now using Feisty / 2.6.20-16 kernel.

Dont forget, max Display Depth must be set to 16 bit (xorg.conf) on these models before restarting X.

    Thanks a lot

Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

A few questions, I installed your packages *the only thing that's worked so far* but what driver do I need to point to in xorg.conf? currently it's set as ati. 2ndly, if this is right, it seems my direct rendering is not working. Any idea? Also, thank you sooooooooo much for those packages, every other way of doing this so far failed with compiling issues...

P.S. I have a rage 3d pro desktop card that is supposed to use the mach64 driver so I just kinda assumed anything to do with the mach64 driver woiuld work for my desktop.

look at zerwas conf on http://fractaldimension.org.uk/ubuntu/xorg/xorg.xml
    he has a Rage Mobility.

Can you use my diagnostic tool as it will tell me lots of things about your setup.

    Code:
    mkdir ~/Xinfo
    cd ~/Xinfo
    wget -O xinfo.sh http://fractaldimension.org.uk/ubuntu/xinfo.txt
    chmod a+x ./xinfo.sh
    ./xinfo.sh
    please attach the *xinfo.tar.gz

    or try my guide on

Here is the results of xinfo, my computer is definently more responsive than it was now that I have to packaged drivers installed, but the direct rendering would be quite nice if you could help me get it working. Thank you so much!

4096 kB of SGRAM (1:1) detected (using 4095 kB).
(WW) ATI(0): Cannot shadow an accelerated frame buffer.
how much video memory have you got?

Acording to dell it has 4mb built in, but I can upgrade it to 8 if I can find a memory stick that fits the slot on the motherboard. Though if I have much more problems with this, I'll probably look into finding a copy of win2000 for this machine and wait till the new ati drivers come out so I can have linux on my lappy.

Re: HOWTO: enable 3d acceleration w/ Rage Mobility (mach64)

I've been trying to compare zerwas's log and yours

he has 8meg but gets a similar message "(WW) ATI(0): Cannot shadow an accelerated frame buffer."

he is using module version = 6.7.192 where you are on 6.7.194.
the difference i see is here
your log has no reference to drm or "(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/mach64_dri.so"

I feel your install of the modules was incomplete.

    I recomend the guide http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...69&postcount=6
although this may break X so be prepared.

The new ati drivers that are to come out are unlikely to help your card, its just too old.

    good luck.

I'll try that when I have time and if breaks x I'll just find my copy of win2000, but as for the new drivers, they're meant for my lappy with a x1400, not the old dell.

    The link isn't working.
