Only a slight overlap? That must explain it ... guess I would have to be around pretty early. And I have a job too, just I work weekends.

In my case, I don't like IRC. It gets annoying when I make a comment or ask a question and it flies by unnoticed.

And often times I've found channels to be highly cliquish.

    I don't need that.

Email and Forums are just fine.

What do you mean by "that's' all there was"?

I've been on the series of tubes known as the Internets™ since 1993. At that time mailing lists and Usenet were popular means of communication. That is still true to this day. The only difference is, web forums didn't exist back then. So in many cases they've replaced mailing lists and Usenet for many newer Internet users (who know nothing about Usenet and little of mailing lists. - You can thank Google "Groups" and Yahoo! "Groups" for a lot of that).

As far as IRC is concerned, you mention mIRC and Xchat; my experience has been that most *nix "old-timers" don't like GUi-based IRC clients. They use clients such as irssi, BitchX or Epic in a terminal.

On the rare occasions that I use IRC, I generally use the Kvirc client. It's a very good and it's cross-platform (xchat is too, but the Windows version is shareware).

"UbuntuForums IRC Channel - Why aren't YOU there?"

Because the default IRC ports are blocked. Any *simple* way to get around it, or better yet: different ports I could try?

Got an ssh sever somewhere to log into?

    Code:
    ssh -L 7777:irc.freenode.net:<<default irc port>> <<your ssh server here>>
Then connect to localhost:7777 and you'll be tunnelled through
Every time you install Jaunty, a kitten........ wait sorry what year is this again?
