    Yes it is doable. You can either use the virtual machine to do the whole thing or just to download the packages and then transfer them to your ubuntu machine.

    Will this allow me to create a new customized distro based on Ubuntu? (Like Mint or any of the *buntu's)

    Re: How to make a live CD/DVD from your harddisk installation

    I had this idea that I could build my ideal system in a virtual machine and export it into a work folder on my physical machine (so that my custom system won't include packages I won't use on that system - ie: the extra ones used to prepare the installation, temporary directories for making the cd structure, etc). Is that possible? If so, how?

    Also, I want my custom installation to preserve the users and desktop configuration, as well as other changes, such as firefox add-ons...do I need to change anything in the instructions in order to achieve this?

    Many thanks for any help.

    Re: How to make a live CD/DVD from your harddisk installation

    Hi,
    I want to make a live cd of my work laptop that contains some (free) wine programs. Will this method have them installed on the dvd as well, if not is there a way i can adapt the guide to make them work?
    Unfortunately there are no alternatives to the programs, otherwise i would be all windows free by now

    Question Re: How to make a live CD/DVD from your harddisk installation

    I am using New ubuntu 10.04 and I went through all the Steps and they Worked perfectly, but Now I am stuck in the Step

    $ sudo mksquashfs ${WORK}/rootfs ${CD}/${FS_DIR}/filesystem.${FORMAT}

    it gives the following error

    $ sudo mksquashfs ${WORK}/rootfs ${CD}/${FS_DIR}/filesystem.${FORMAT}
    Parallel mksquashfs: Using 4 processors
    Creating 4.0 filesystem on /home/waqar/cd/casper/filesystem.squashfs, block size 131072.
    Segmentation fault

    The rootfs size is 2.3 GB but I think that wont be a problem. I dont know what to do next, any kind of help would be Appreciated

    Re: How to make a live CD/DVD from your harddisk installation

    Would it be possible to use GRUB2?

    When installing grub-pc in the chroot environment, it asks for a device where to install GRUB to, I skip this step but would like to know if it's correct.

    I'm actually testing my ISO in VirtualBox, I have some details but it works! Thanks a lot for your guide.

    I have problems when selecting to boot in graphical mode, the system does not pass the usplash screen. Anyway, if booting to text mode, I can run "startx" and get into my window manager .

    Now I have to test using real media .

    I've found there is no problem with this.

    Now I see it can be done, but don't know what would be the "correct" method for adding custom entries to the GRUB menu.

    I have one more question. I can not directly modify the default LiveCD user because it is created at boot time, how can I indicate a script to be executed when the LiveCD session starts?
