I know there's a post regarding the ubuntuguide site, but has anyone else noticed the same issue with the backport repository servers? I've tried a few different nameservers and can't look up ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net on any of them.

The mirrormax mirror is down. Try replacing all instances of it in /etc/apt/sources.list to http://mirror.brianpuccio.net/ubuntu-backports-repository/
