Arrow BEST Mix between OSX, Vista, Ubuntu

This is not a MOCK-Up which i never really understood. Because I want to see stuff that can be done right now.

Let me know what you think.

I think Ubuntu needs to do something like this.

Make the desktop unique yet familiar

    .

The old panel is still active and accessible. It down on the right hand side of the screen, under/below the sidebar.

You mean, like, taking the dock from OSX and the sidebar from Vista and adding our own colors to it? Doesn't seem very unique. We can do better.
Also, docks are not everybody's thing (I for one can't stand them).
The default settings should, nay, will be simple with a bit of tasteful eyecandy. And please, please don't get rid of the ol' panels.
You could think about maintaining an eyecandy package which pulls basic software to run all that stuff (i.e. gDesklets).
I don't have anything against easy customizing - in fact I embrace it. But don't force it onto users. Because the users that want more from their OS than to 'just work
(which should be what Ubuntu is about) are likely to click a few buttons to install an extra eyecandy package.

Sure, Ubuntu should try to be both unique and familiar. But I cna't say I would want it to aspire to have the look from your screenshot. All releases of Ubuntu have it's own graphical theme, something which Windows lacks entirely, and Mac OS is having a hard time with.
Every release of WIndows looks different, sure, but they don't really have a theme to them. Well, with the exception of Vista, where gloss seemed to be the theme.
Mac looks more or less the same in every release. The changes are mostly minor.

I would say its a very tough call. And please don't knock the dock or the setup until you have worked with it.

Its very very fluent and intuitive.

And for the most part this interface doesn't kill system resources, draws attention from computer users to non computer users. And if familiar enough for anyone to use.

And most importantly it gets people interested in linux.

Yes there is a fine line between needing new users (commercialism) and independence/philosphy.

Trying to appease everyone is impossible but putting a little ritz on for the public could be a very good thing for all.

I think the point is, if you want to have a different interface / eye candy for future releases that's fine. People don't want Ubuntu to seem like it just takes the most notable parts of the other two OSes and incorporates them. Ubuntu should come up with its OWN ideas.
If the only reason you think your software is better is because it's FOSS, you need to write better software

Coming from OS X, I like Ubuntu's look. It's sleek and simple, and that's all that counts. Eyecandy is the death of class and style imho. Please never let any of Windows Vista's look influence the way Ubuntu is designed.

I don't like the dock, and if you add it in and get rid of the panels, I will not use it. It is hard enough to get a panel back after you delete it accidentally, doing this will make me mad. I have tried the dock, I didn't like it at all because of how much space it took up. If I lowered the amount of space, it wouldn't look very good. If I raised it, it would cover more than the frame of my window.
