I have an HP Compaq Presario v5000; 512RAM; 1.5 Ghz Celeron M.
I basically want the Slackware-based distro that has the best hardware support. Some distros just don't like laptops, I think. I also have an evil Broadcom card.
Thanks!

Why not ask this question on a slackware forum ?
..try Zenwalk 5, itś fast (startup 20-30 sec). best with DSL, not slow, using Modem 56K, but you can't connect, if you be european, using ISDN Cards. ISDN is not implemented... (same as slack)
package-manager is not as easy as ubuntu does. but V 5.2 will include easier netpkg . synaptic is not included.
overseas greets....
FYI that ZenWalk 5.2 beta and ZenLive 5.2Alpha (liveCD version)
are available to test. So far the beta is very sweet on my laptop.
The ZenLive 5.2 alpha supports USB install with persistence. I'll try that out hopefully tonight.
Slackware is the best Slackware-based distro.
That being said, I am quite happy with the way VectorLinux runs on my Compaq Presario (an older model than yours though).

Hi:
Well I also have a Broadcom card and I am running it quite successfully with Slackware 12.1 and kernel 2.6.24.5-smp. The Broadcom card is:
As I am using xfce I also installed wicd for a network manager. So it can be done .Code:root@skamandros/home/andrew# lspci | grep Broadcom 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02) 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11a/b/g (rev 01)

You think that's air you're breathing now?
Why run something "Slackware-based" when you can run the real thing?
