If you are not a programmer, Dive Into Python will be useless.

See my wiki for free books and resources. The best Python reference is actually the official tutorial and documentation, which is available for download or online browsing.

If you want to buy a book:

Go to the official Python document site, learn all you can from there. Its free. Then if you really want a book, you can roughly know which ones are good for you because you would have understood the basics by then, and you can decide whether that book provides your need for further knowledge or not. In a way, you don't buy a book to later regret it.

I personally got Python Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science by Zelle

I found it to be a good overall book.

I would recommend to also get a python book for beginners as a reference.

I personally learned Python with the book The Quick Python Book. There is now also a 2nd edition
