How do I get ubuntu, to read my files off of my SanDisk Cruzer?

I have files which I have downloaded, from the internet and files which I have from my XP system which I am not using anymore. I simply got taired of using window's . However I am no stranger to linux, I have just not used, it in along time and I know Ubuntu is just another version of Unix it self. I dont plan dont on going back to window's because it crashes to much for me, and it freezes up alot!

I used to have redhat, on a dual system, but some how my files to my disc became corrupt. I have always like using linux. But I was stuck on Window's for along time. But I just wipe my hard drive clean and install Ubuntu.

is it the one that comes with that compression program (which i think is silly)? if so, you might not without a windows PC. the USB stick should simply automount if the USB disk has a FAT filesystem.

Ps. the ackward comma "," placement makes your post a little hard to read.

    Hello Hardyn

I am not sure or not if it has a FAT file system on it!

I'm wondering if the sandisk cruizer has the horrid U3 system on it. If it does, you will need to remove that software on a Windows PC before you can mount it in linux.

I have a sandisk drive with the u3 system. I have one serious question before removing the software on it. First I will say that it does not need to be removed to be used in ubuntu. In fact this flash drive is the only removable storage that I have found that works out of the box with ubuntu, windows family and mac/osx family computers. I don't know if this is because of the software on it but i have suspicions that the ability for macs to read its nfts patition especially is.

However I will say I have been having some weird behavior with it since upgrading to hardy. It does not get recognized when plugged in unless I restart the computer. And sometimes when I try to unmount it, it says info is being written indefinitely.

I fix my problem! It was simply taking the password, off of my sandisk cruzer! You know the sandisk cruzer, has a security menue where you go in and put in a password, to protect your data, just in case some one else, get a hold of it, are you loose it.

Right now! Its, working fine! I can read all of my window's files from XP. Thanks for responding to my post! I really appreciated it! UBUNTU ROCK'S i LOVE IT!

Re: How do I get ubuntu, to read my files off of my SanDisk Cruzer?

Let me stand to partially correct myself. My sandisk drive is formatted as fat16 this is supported by osx along with most other oses out there. The software then on the sandisk is unimportant for accessing the flash drive.

This is good for me because my drive has been saying both in ubuntu and windows that it only has 841 mb free. Which is odd because all the used up space (hidden and unhidden files and folders) only take up 43 mb. This is a two gig drive there is obviously something going wrong.

Im getting these numbers both from windows (xp vista) and ubuntu hardy.

My solution will be to formate it. Ill let anyone know if there are problems.
    cheers
