Re: Howto: Simple upgrade to Hardy's developing kernel - 2.6.24

Hi, n00b here. I tried the python script once, and while it was running I saw something about i386 in there. I originally have kernel 2.6.22-14-rt
installed on 64 bit system. It's the Ubuntu Studio 7.10 x86_64 release.

Is this "Hardy" Kernel a 64 bit one, or a x86?

anyway, as I was pondering on that question, the upgrade was complete and I restarted.
When it booted back up, it told me my X server was not configured right and X windows couldnt load. I attribute this to the nvidia drivers for my display, but could it be something else?
And it its not, how to I install the nvidia drivers in that kernel?

My machine is an HP Pavilion tx1000 series (tx1308nr) tablet pc.
It's got a Broadcom BCM94311MCG wlan wi-fi card (that I can not get working in 2.6.22)
and I was also wondering if the tablet screen will fully work
(In 2.6.22 I can only use it s a left mouse click, no biggie), WebCam and (most importantly sound.
lspci tells me i have an nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2).

Sorry about lack of organization, but it is what it is.

Any help is welcome, even telling to go ***** is also understandable.

edit: one more thing, how do I add the nvidia driver install command to the python script?

The kernel works fine for me on 64bit. For the nvidia drivers, I don't know how you installed them, but I just ran Envy again in the new kernel and rebooted, then everything was fine.

hey, I just did some fiddling around and got the 2.6.24 kernel running.
I modified the python file, i dont know if im allowed, but if it hellps:
    I added
    Code:
    nvidia-glx-new
    at the end of packages = "linux linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic"
    Code:
    packages =  "linux linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic nvidia-glx-new"
When i ran the script again, everything worked perfectly
I only had to add the boot param "noapic" to the kernel entry in GRUB. For some reason no linux distro likes my laptop's apic. No biggie.

Now that im in the new kernel, i have out-of-the-box audio.
Haven't tried the new bc43 driver for wifi

I'll update if anythign new happens.

Now, for the stupid part. Since i updated this, am I still technically running a 64 bit OS?

Used the script adding nvidia-glx-new to the packages. Works fine as far as I can tell.

    Computer: Freeman
    CPU: 2ghz AMD64 X2
    Ram: 2Gib
    Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX

For some reason no linux distro likes my laptop's apic.
    What model is it?

    Yep.

You should be using the generic kernel. I'm not certain why it installed 386 as well...

Re: Howto: Simple upgrade to Hardy's developing kernel - 2.6.24

Would someone with an nVidia graphics card please post the results of the following:
    Code:
    lspci | grep Display
    Code:
    lshw -C video
I'm altering the script to automatically determine if the user needs the nVidia drivers... If so it will prompt you tp install them or not (Envy)...

    Thanks

    Ok, here goes:

    Code:
    gigamo@GIGAMO2:~$ lshw -C video

Yeah I just found out that if it installs the 386 kernel then don't use it cause no restricted modules or anything is installed for it. I booted into the generic kernel cause I noticed I couldn't use my webcam or anything else with the 386 kernel.

Alright... I've uploaded the new script that should determine if nVidia drivers are needed... Would someone give it a try? You can always press Ctrl-C to abort the installation...
