I'm using the tp-fancontrol script from thinkwiki as well, it works nicely to keep the fan noise down.
Thanks for the tip. I too have the T43 and it runs very fast w/ Xubuntu 9.04. I run everything on it, and it's my go to lappy at the moment.

I also have a Dell Vostro, which is quite good as well. If I buy another laptop any time soon, it'll probably be another T-series thinkpad or a Dell Latitude.

I just picked up a T-61 in vgc off of CL recently after my Acer 5100 died. I've always wanted a Thinkpad of my own after using them for years at work in the field - they're tough as nails buggers.

I'm loving it so far and have Ubuntu 9.10 on it along with XP Pro SP3.

I almost forgot, I found a Thinkpad X60s at a reseller a couple of months ago, and it's a great machine.

I have one other -- a 550Mhz Celeron -- and I've had two others in the past, and if I was actively looking for a computer I'd definitely get a fifth one. Perhaps one day.

Lenovo ThinkPad T510 with configured specs:
    *Core i5 @ 2.53 Ghz
    *3 Gib DDR3 RAM
*Nvidia NVS 3100M discrete graphics with 512 Mib GDDR3
*Extended (9-cell) battery, good for 7 hours if idling

Overall, I'm very happy with it. My only gripe is with the sound hardware. It's too quiet, and it clips really easily if you try to pre-amp it. Also, there's no microphone jack (maybe you only get that if you get a webcam?) But otherwise it's great and certainly worth the $1400 even just for the keyboard.

I want to "acquire" my work T61. It's going so slooooow with Windows XP that I want to see what it can do with Linux installed!

Not to mention, the 15" widescreen is a lot larger than the 12" 4:3 ratio screen on my own personal (Dell) laptop.

My new T510 just arrived yesterday.

    Intel Core i7-620M Processor 2.66GHz
    NVIDIA NVS 3100m Graphics 512MB DDR3
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (2 DIMM)
    320GB Hard Disk Drive

We used Thinkpads at my old boarding school, I saw them thoroughly abused and still survive.

Sorta nervous about installing Ubuntu. It was installed on my current old Acer by a friend in the US [I'm in Australia now]; I'm not the most proficient at computers.

Make sure you create a Recover CD set before you install any Linux since it may delete you recovery partition. Or you can phone Lenovo support and ask the CDs to be sent to you.
Other than that, there shouldn't be any problems installing Ubuntu.

Do not know where to put this.

I changed the icons for the gnome panel applet, just inverted the colors more or less. Looks better in Lucid. After installing it just put the new icons in: /usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-hdaps-applet/

(hdaps-paused.png is just the image that is shown in the "add panel applet" list)

    PS.
To install the hdaps gnome panel applet type these lines into the terminal (this is not the hdaps kernel module it self, just the panel applet):
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libpanel-applet2-dev
    mkdir gnome-hdaps
    cd gnome-hdaps
    wget http://www.zen24593.zen.co.uk/hdaps/gnome-hdaps-applet-20081204.tar.gz
    tar xfvz gnome-hdaps-applet-20081204.tar.gz
    sudo gcc $(pkg-config --cflags --libs libpanelapplet-2.0) -o gnome-hdaps-applet gnome-hdaps-applet.c
    sudo cp gnome-hdaps-applet /usr/bin/
    sudo mkdir /usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-hdaps-applet/
    sudo cp *.png /usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-hdaps-applet/
    sudo cp GNOME_HDAPS_StatusApplet.server /usr/lib/bonobo/servers/
    cd ..
    rm -R gnome-hdaps

My question is this, on that wiki page, there are a number of options to quieten down the fan--I have tried all of them, but do not seem to get it right--probably because the problem is I have absolutely no idea how to apply them. Could someone please give us a step by step so the blerry fan can stop ringing in my ears. Thanks

    Re: ThinkPad Owners Thread

My Thinkpad T40 is coming up to 7 years old. (2373-22g)

It has just been through a difficult period - the fan was clearly dying, and it got to the point where I could only really leave it on for 10 minutes before shutting it down.

Got a new (long) fan from a chinese company, and took apart the computer to replace it. I half-expected it not to work when I pressed the power button after reassembling it, but it works like new now!

    What a great machine!

I'll raise my glasses to another happy 7 years...

    Duncan
