    And copy that file to wine source folder. Then cd to wine source folder in terminal and do this:

    patch -p1 < 3dmark.diff

    Than just do ./configure
    make depend && make
    and sudo checkinstall (or sudo make install if you don't want to make .deb)
    But that's the same patch as http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8548 which I was using. When I boot CoD 4 it says it won't use blend and it doesn't start.

    Re: Call of duty 4 3D/OpenGL issue

    The patch resolves a 'glow' issue, not 'blend'. What graphics card & driver are you using?

    PS, I see '8800gts' in your sig, from the AppDB:
    NVIDIA-Users *Update - 07.01.2008*:

    The new NVIDIA-Beta Driver brokes down the COD4 support. Please use 100.xx until NVIDIA fixed the 169.xx.

    If there is no other way then use the beta driver (8800GTS users?) please use this patch:

    The nvidia patch didn't work, I get the error "Video card or driver doesn't support UBYTE4N vertex data."

    I don't know what to suggest, other than trying the appdb or visiting winehq on freenode...

    It doesn't work with the old nVidia driver either apparently... how cute

    Clean up & get some dep's :
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove wine
    rm -r ~/.wine
    sudo apt-get build-dep wine
    sudo apt-get install build-essential checkinstall
    Get wine, patch it & install it:
    Code:
    mkdir wine && cd wine
    wget http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/wine/wine-0.9.50.tar.bz2
    tar -xvjf wine-0.9.50.tar.bz2
    wget http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8548
    cp attachment.cgi\?id\=8548 wine-0.9.50/3dmark.diff && cd wine-0.9.50
    patch -p1 < 3dmark.diff
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --enable-opengl --with-x
    make depend && make
    sudo checkinstall
    Accept the defaults, an option will come up to set a description, set one and enter, select the next default, job done - checkinstall created a .deb package, installed it and left a copy in the folder you're working in.

    Set up wine:
    Code:
    wineprefixcreate
    winecfg
    Now you need to set the 'Windows Version' to XP. While you're here I recommend that you visit the drives tab and use the 'Autodetect' button, double checking your CDROM path & drive type with the 'Show Advanced' button.

    Get the required DX9 dll:
    Code:
    mkdir dx9 && cd dx9
    wget http://www.m3fe.com/files/d3dx9_34.zip
    unzip d3dx9_34.zip
    mv d3dx9_34.dll ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
    Now it's time to install COD4:
    Code:
    cd /path/to/cdrom/
    wine setup.exe
    No-dvd crack - needed to launch:
    Go to gamecopyworld & get the appropriate no-dvd/fixed exe, eg:

    Make a backup of your original iw3sp.exe (location shown below) before replacing it with the fixed exe.

    Launch the game:
    Code:
    cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Activision/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4\ -\ Modern\ Warfare && wine iw3sp.exe
    Once launched you'll need to reduce some graphics options to avoid glitches & improve performance. Some options don't work & some just don't look right, I recommend that you disable the following:

    Anti-aliasing - Doesn't work.
    Sync Every Frame
    Shadows
    Specular Map
    Depth of Field
    Glow
    Number of Dynamic Lights
    Soften Smoke Edges - Unplayable with this option enabled.

    Good luck. I hope it works for you, let us know.

    Hey this is an awesome guide..but I just tried using it (on 64bit Gutsy) and when I try "sudo apt-get install build dep wine"
    I get "wine dependencies not satisfied"

    Re: Call of duty 4 3D/OpenGL issue

    This is because amd64 Ubuntu releases don't ship with Wine in the repo's. Try adding a repository to your system's list of APT sources: http://winehq.org/site/download-deb.
    You will also need to take a few extra steps: http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit.
    I hope that helps, I can't offer any cast iron advise on this as I don't run Ubuntu. On Arch I used a 32bit chroot environment to build Wine & 32bit-libs to run it.

    PS. Let me know if this helps you compile & I'll update the guide

    Haha, sorry I'm a total linux noob here, I might need more detailed instructions than that I tried to edit the sources with " sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
    "
    and I added "deb http://winehq.org/site/download-deb"
    and now I try "sudo apt-get update" and I get "E: Malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)"
