I doubt the arch can be forced & there're extra dependencies. It's a lot quicker & simpler to compile 32-bit Wine though. Just follow my guide on page 2 & substitute the patch for the one I used on page 11 if the Wine version is >0.9.58.

In order to run COD4 you have to use the patch for 3DMark 06 in Wine's source

If you are compiling in 64-bit, read in WineHQ how to compile it for 64-bit Hardy.

I'll try these entries when I get in my home.

For now, I tried these combinations:

Old 3DMark patch + Git Wine
    Old 3DMark Patch + wine 0.9.60
    New 3DMark Patch + Wine 0.9.60
    New 3DMark Patch + Somebody's patch I've found + Wine 0.9.60

The best combo was the New 3DMark + Wine 0.9.60

I Trie with nVidia drivers 169.12 and 173.08 and got the same results

Now I disovered I have to disable:
    Specular map
    Shadows
    Glow

In order to achieve a 100% Stable game.

Re: Call of duty 4 3D/OpenGL issue

ALSO soften smoke edges!!! the game gets all screwed up if you keep this.
sad that you have to turn off most of the cool effects
I enabled shadows and it played fine except that the shadows didnt show.
also glow works, and I think you have to have this enabled if you wanna use night vision.
Does anyone else have a problem that in most fps games running under wine, when you press the, say W button to move forward and hold it, and sometimes when you let go it moves automatically? then when you exit it then go into say, a text editor it will just repedatley type ¨WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW¨ etc etc
and then you have to log out and log back in.
I find this really, really, really, really annoying, especially when it happens practically everytime I play cod4!

How do I go about installing this patch?

Rylin, Look over my previous post again, please say if I'm missing something.

thefishki345, if I have the nautilus file manager open I'll see its search box fill with w's, a's, s's, d's, etc until I fire with the mouse. My only other observation is a huge performance drop in Ubuntu over Arch. Under Arch I can set textures to 'extra' & it's faster than 'normal' under Ubuntu. The texture settings are more important than effects imo & really add realism.

    Yeah..
    DAMNIT!!
does anyone else sometimes have this thing where when you go and launch cod4 singleplayer OR multiplayer it doesnt launch? before it was just multiplayer and that was cos of the patch, this is really annoying cos then I have to go and uninstall it and start the game again from the VERY beginning!!!

Not here, maybe a reinstall is needed for you. You don't need to start from the beginning though, just backup your profile.

Re: Call of duty 4 3D/OpenGL issue

Yeah, thats what im doing, but I am recompiling wine now, AGAIN for the 4th time cos when I just normally reinstall cod4 it doesnt make any desktop shortcuts, so then I cant patch it with the no dvd patch, and it prolly doesnt work properly anyway.
and, when wine gets updated to 9.61 or something, how do you update it if you have compiled it from source?

Re: Call of duty 4 3D/OpenGL issue

You're on 64-bit aren't you? You could yse my deb to save time.

Desktop links (whether applied or not) will not affect the use of a fixed exe.

If compiled from source & used checkinstall, it's no different to updating any other package. If you've not used this & still have your source dir laying around you can cd to it & issue 'make uninstall' (check the makefile), before compiling/installing a new version.

PS. Why update Wine unless you know there's a fix that you need? Still running 0.9.50 on my main rig.
