Screen Resolution

I am just getting started with Ubuntu 7.1 on my desk and laptop.

On my laptop, I have got the res default stuck on 640 x 480 and can't change it. When I click on the up & down arrows, it just continues to display 640x480. I can't change the refresh rate either.

Please help.
