It's unfortunate, because with Microsoft, all I had to do was plug in the monitor, turn on the laptop, and away I went.

So to the Prof: try attaching a monitor to the laptop and see what happens.
ATi is finally releasing OSS drivers for Linux, so hopefully ATi cards will finally work better.

Thats not Ubuntu's fault. That is ATI's fault. They are jumping in the game a bit late and from what I have heard their driver is just bad and buggy.

Long before Linux/Ubuntu I have always been an Nvidia fan myself.

I realize whose fault it is, but that doesn't change the fact that I can't use dual monitors with my ThinkPad. I'm not laying blame, just pointing out something Windows can do that Ubuntu can't. When I'm not at the office, I use Ubuntu, when I'm at the office, I use Windows.

The good news is since ATI has released their OSS driver that will change fast and the driver and support in the larger Linux community itself will bring ATI's drivers right up there with Nvidia fast..... Though I still like Nvidia better lol

    Nonono.

The correct way to phase is "ATI has terrible support for Ubuntu."

I would suggest a different bet: Put a computer with windows and one with ubuntu online and start clicking all the ads you see one every site you see, and see which computer blows up first.

Wow man, thats like calling Dell support and telling them there is something wrong with your Sony VIAO.
Put the pressure where it belongs...ATI
Thats the ONLY way we are going to get the support we need, by hounding the HW companies.

PF, I know it's been a hard road but I hope you make it all the way through your check list, Best of Luck!

    Hello,

I just wanted to give ya'll an update. I've been having a heck of a time with FireFox. Gray screens have plagued me at an increasing level. I have four plug-ins: greasemonkey, mplayer, adblock, and ubuntu firefox extensions. I've disabled each one and still get what I call the "gray screen of death" lol. I say this because I have to force quite FF. As of about five minutes ago I'm working with Opera.

You'll find it. Just keep looking.

You allowed to use 7.04 or stuck with 7.10?

Try switching the 3D effects off.

Do you use java, mine give me a casual gray screen initializing java. And it's not always "of death", it can revive itself.

You can also try swiftweasel and swiftfox, both are optimized version of firefox. (Former recommended)
