Re: Improve (potentially halve) login time by using readahead

    I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 !!

Now I'm trying to tweak it..

When I boot with profile added to my kernel line, the /etc/readahead/boot file updates, but the /etc/readahead/desktop doesn't.

    Is that normal ??

I'll follow the guide on the first post and see how I get on !

    Thanks

Power on to Grub 2 seconds.

Grub to Login takes 30 seconds.

Login to a working desktop takes 15 seconds.

    Total 47 seconds.

Is that about right for an Acer Aspire One D150 10.1" Screen ??

    It's the same here.

P.S.: Where does the red (Non)Smiley above come from?

    But:

Using of the profile boot option belongs to this tutorial: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=254263

Here we don't use it! We don't use the directory /etc/readahead at all.

hi, i happen to use a solid state drive, would this method still improve the login time?

according to conky it takes about 24 seconds to boot to my desktop with everything loaded (auto login), bootchart says 11 seconds... thus login must take 13 seconds... which is poor in my opinion.

I don't feel this style of readahead will help; what you need is more of a timeline watermarking type readahead like what sreadahead provides. I haven't looked too hard at that due to my lack of a SSD to test with.

Nice tweak. I experience great improvement in login time. It would be nice to have this by default in future versions. Thanks

Re: Improve (potentially halve) login time by using readahead

    Hi.

Karmic replaced readahead package by one called sreadahead.
Is it possible to profile the login sequence with this one?

    Commands like sreadahead-watch and sreadahead-list don't exist.
