    I don't seem to have the menu in xfce-panel, what applet is it?
    Thank you, mariachi.

    The applet called -- guess what -- 'xfce4-menu-plugin'. I believe it is installed automatically with the xfce-panel (from source as I did, or through the repos). In the 'add to panel' dialog, it is called 'xfce menu'. Keep in mind though that I have customised it (right click > Properties). The default title/text (I believe it is normally 'Start' or 'Applications') as well as the default icon are different.

    Not like you can in gnome, at least not that I know. You can, however, add a panelrc file to the gtk theme and specify different settings for the panel in there. I never bother.

    I just checked Synaptic and could not find a package for the menu plugin. I guess it comes with the panel itself.

    This is how you can change your panel in xfce4:

    Make a .gtkrc-2.0 and put it in your /home/folder

    This is one that I used with the image "stripe_autum.png" when I was on xubuntu 7.04:

    Code:
    style "panel"
    {
      bg[NORMAL] = "#595553"
      bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "stripe_autum.png"
      fg[NORMAL] = "#FFFFFF"
      }

    widget_class "*Panel*"      style "panel"
    widget "*Panel*"            style "panel"
    class "*Panel*"             style "panel"

    ...then just put your image in your /home/folder along with your .gtkrc-2.0 file

    Now if you just want a color change, then edit out the "bg_pixmap[NORMAL] part with the image...and just make your bg[NORMAL] the color you want it to be...and the fg[NORMAL] is your font color.

    There are other ways to change the buttons, font size and other things, but I'm not sure because I was always doing it for panel image.
