    Bitmap editor?

OK, I'm wierd, but I've spent years perfecting making pictures in MS Paint. I basically draw these pixel by pixel, and to do that, you need a program that gives you precise control over the color of each pixel. Also a program that does not implement layers.

GIMP is great for most things, but it can't do this. It doesn't even have good line, circle, and curve tools like MS Paint.

So I ask: Is there a graphics tool for Linux that works similarly to MS Paint?

The right idea, but lacks two all-important functions:
    1. An undo button
    2. A zoom function

You might try either Inkscape (Gnome app) or Krita (KDE). There is also Pixel, but I don't remember if it is Gnome or KDE based. Doesn't really matter as you can run the programs in either environment.

It's not totally wierd, Paint's interface is very easy to get used to.

Gnupaint and OpenOffice Draw may work. TuxPaint will drive you crazy.

I'm not sure of the status, but Paint.NET is like Paint but re-written in .NET and enhanced for better color picking, layers, formats, and tools. The Mono team was porting it from Windows-only .NET to cross-platform Mono.

In KDE there is kolourpaint and they have a page for Product Comparison which lists a number of similar programs, maybe one of them works for you?
    • Gimp
    • Gnome Paint
    • GPaint
    • KPaint
    • KIconEdit
    • Krita
    • Microsoft Paint (hey, did you look into running it thorugh Wine?)

    Re: Bitmap editor?

I´m a Pixelartist and I work with Krita, Gimp 2.3 and Jdraw 1.2 (beta)...
My favourite tool is Gimp 2.3 but if I you like more simple and easy tools, check Jdraw (It´s like Idraw or Character Maker Pro. Note: Requires Java)

    Some Screenshots

The pixel scene was made at Gimp 2.3 but in that moment I opened it on Jdraw because I want to check the palette options on it...

    Spriting at Gimp 2.3...

    JDraw´s Webpage

    Jdraw Beta

PD: None of them are difficult, just try to learn them for a while, Gimp has a good line tool like the paths (curve line) or pressing Shift after clicking in a point with pencil you make a simple line, and with selections you can do easily another forms

I always use Kolourpaint. I do the same thing as you, and it is superior to MS Paint in every way.

    Re: Bitmap editor?

I've got Kolourpaint now and yes, it is to Paint as Firefox is to IE. Excellent!
