If you want to understand the basic building blocks like memory management, periferal communications, I/O scheduling and how these things are implemented you should look somewhere else. I had a book (kernel 2.4) about this sort of problems but I' have to search for it. The book previously indicated views the kernel from the user perspective and not the developer's one.
