Its easily one of the best. I really like it. I'd say scorched3d and bzflag are two classics. Both excellent.

thanks! yeah those are some great suggestions, and i've played a few of them. BUT are there any that are the same kind of rpg/adventure style as wesnoth AND as good? i'm beginning to think not.

Wesnoth isn't really an RPG.
However, Hero of Allacrost is, and seems to be coming together quite nicely. http://www.allacrost.org/
At the moment it's only out in demo form, but the next release is just around the corner from what I hear.

You might find something of interest there. ^_^
