Question Automatix2 - The easy way

I've seen various posts all over the place on the best way to install this, and they are all hard, problem prone, etc. so I come to you with a solution!

Simply select one of these links, save it, and install! Just make sure to pick the right distro and especially arch (i386 or AMD64)

    Feisty:
    AMD 64
    i386 (32 bit)

    Edgy:
    AMD 64
    i386 (32 bit)

    Dapper:
    AMD 64
    i386 (32 bit)

Re: Automatix2 - The easy way

And why would you want to install Automatix2 to have it modify your /etc/apt/sources.list (and who knows what else) since you can install everything that you need from Add/Remove, synaptic, apt-get, or aptitude?
In the world of Linux, who needs Windows and Gates...

Got most of my golden beans at an auction on eBay (with a couple of free drinks).

Those are excellent, and they are so much easier than the old days when you had to hunt down everything manually, but automatix provides a few more packages that don't show up in those managers. I think many people will agree, it's for the extra addons that those can not provide. And you don't have to get it, I'm just putting this up here so that the people who have had so many problems can now find a extremely simple solution; but it's a good idea to post your ideas too, it's good to have something to think about first.

Re: Automatix2 - The easy way

I disagree with this thread's sentiment strongly.

Automatix has its uses in some special cases, but in the vast majority of cases where I've seen it recommended, installing the needed package directly is always faster and more straightforward.

maybe its because it adds safe repos?

    #AUTOMATIX REPOS START

    deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main restricted universe multiverse

    deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-updates universe multiverse

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-security main restricted universe multiverse
    #AUTOMATIX REPOS END
somehow i dont think repos from canonical.com or ubuntu.com are going to screw over your system.

I tried automatix once and it made a mess of my system and before I was through I ended up doing a reload. Never had that problem with apt-get

Re: Automatix2 - The easy way

    ?

Ive used automatix and i dont have that fluendo repo. But i know it uses the mediubuntu repo as well, but it removes it after it is done. But whatever you made your point, it uses some third party repos which cant be supported. continue.'

and also automatix makes time based backups before it adds anything, i mentioned that in that guys support post

I didn't expect such a discussion, but I believe this might come in usefull to everyone anyways. Might have to change the heading though

Re: Automatix2 - The easy way

I don't like Automatix. It messed up one of my computers. I gave information to Arnie and others but no solution came of it. I've found it's loads easier to install the individual packages themselves. Also, with Fiesty, I see no reason at all to use Automatix2. I've created a list of packages to install that I keep as a bash script in my /home/. Only takes 10 seconds to open the terminal and type the command.
