New DELL Ubuntu Purchasee!!!!

I have just purchased a new DELL with Ubuntu 7.04. I was very happy to see that they were not offering junk or low grade options! I got a NVidia graphics card, 2GB Mem *4G possible*, 320GM HDD and I am telling you. I have not purchased 1 freaking PC from Dell. I always purchased HP computers. It ran me 1000 out the door with all of the upgrades and free shipping. If I would have took the bare bones. It would have been like 650. Now I can junk this freaking dual boot monster of Vista Business. Talk about issues...PLEASE!

Get a DELL with UBUNTU!!!!!

I just built my own computer, so that won't be happening. But I'm really exited about the exposure that this is creating for Ubuntu, I can't wait to see how many new people this will bring over!

Out of curiosity, what came preinstalled with it beside the normal stuff that Ubuntu comes with?

I purchased an unencumbered laptop computer last week, took delivery yesterday and installed 64-bit Feisty (and took the "lazy" Automatix option to install the extra goodies). Even if Dell had offered these machines 1 week ago, I very much doubt I would have purchased from them (although I must admit that it would be easier to find replacement parts for a Dell in 2-3 years than for a "no-name" machine - fortunately I've got a 2-year warranty).

I applaud Dell for what they're doing, and unlike some other posters, I don't have strong objections to the limited range of machines, distros, or the modest price differential. I hope that they are successful and their customers happy. For me, I'm going to support the vendors who have been in the Linux game longer and in whom I can have confidence that they'll remain in the game for the long term.

Don't get me wrong, if Dell has the resolve to keep offering Linux 5 years from now, that will be great for everyone. And I don't believe that System76 or other Linux vendors are going to lose business.

You should write a letter to Dell telling them the same thing. I'm sure they'd appreciate that Ubuntu has brought one customer over from HP to Dell.

This is a good point, I normally buy Toshiba Laptops and build my own desktops but as soon as Dell starts offering the Ubuntu Machines here they will be the only company I buy from and I will recomend them to both my Linux and Windows friends until they give me a reason not to. But as soon as I can buy them they have a life long customer here.

I secretly wonder if AMD/ATi will stand up and take notice that their cards aren't offered because of the poor driver situation.
