Smile Automatix2 now has Thunderbird 2.0.

I just installed Automatix2 and found it has now included Thunderbird 2.0. It will delete any former Thunderbird versions and keep your settings for the 2.0 version. Those who like Thunderbird and don't mind using Automatix2 will find this the easiest way to install.

Note: I appreciated the help from several who gave instructions on installing Thunderbird as a tar.gz file. However, it still remains true, Automatix2 is the simplest method.

It may be harder, but installing from the tar.gz file would be much more reliable. Automatix2 is known to screw you sometimes.
My Baby: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.6 GHz Dual Core Processor, 2 GB RAM, ASUS M2N-MX Motherboard, Western Digital Caviar 80 GB HDD, Hauppauge WinTV-Go-Plus, Integrated NVidia 6100 GPU, Thermaltake Matrix Case, runs Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy. I <3 it.

Well, good luck with Automatix and if it breaks your system later on for whatever reason, you should post the problem on their support forum since they are better equipped to handle it.

Thanks Taurus. I will take your advice. I couldn't get Thunderbird 2.0 to install using your instructions. There was something about not being able to make a link to any locations. I was going to install 1.5. via Automatix2. I have never had a problem with Automatix2 installing Thunderbird 1.5. I was surprised to see the 2.0 version. I tried it and it works.
    Thanks again.

It's your system so you can install whatever you want. Just want to let you know in case there is a problem with your machine later on, then you can't really blame Ubuntu.

why not post a survey. which has caused more system damage/problems. improper command line use. or using automatix. i'd bet hands down it's improper command line usage. when will the command line junkies admit that not everybody wants to be like them? most computer users of any operating system want the simplest ways to do something. how many windows users actually take the time to do routine maintenance (defrag, etc.) probably less than 10%. ubuntu may not support automatix (i don't know for sure) but during regular ubuntu updates, updates to automatix are included. why not acknowledge there are simpler ways to install programs than using the command line for everything? how many users in this forum get incorrect commands from other users? yes the command line has it's place. just not for everything. there are other ways. i've used automatix on both of my computers that run 6.06, and never had a problem.

Your right, and I won't. I will say that I agree with oilchangeguy. I have never had a problem, yet, using Automatix2. I have used it on four different Linux versions. Could it be just a problem with system incompatibilities? I would not be the one to know this. I am too much of a noob to answer that. I only know what I know. I know that Automatix2 has done me a good job so far. However, saying that, I also like the command line. I like knowing something of what it takes to get a program installed and working properly.

You might at upgrade though, there has been talk about blocking 6.06 systems with automatix installed on them at UDS. While a bit extreme it does exemplify the unsupported nature of Automatix with respect to Ubuntu.

Moving thread to cafe, this isnt a support thread.

i'd never go thru the hassle of upgrading, clean installs on any os, is the best way to go. so when the next lts version is released i'll do a clean install of that.

Actually the way I've heard it is that update-manager will look for instances of automatix and other related helper scripts that could possibly cause system breakage and then just say no if you attempt to use upgrade-manager to upgrade your system.
