Slightly off topic, but Bionic Commando was the first game I ever beat. I was like 8. My dad let me stay up late (I don't think there were save points? I don't remember) so I could beat it!

MY vote for hardest game ever is Target Earth on the Sega Genesis. It was insanely hard I don't think I ever beat it.

I remember spending hours and hours working on Contra III. (the alien wars, I think) Even now, the only way I can get through it is with save states on the emulator. Contra for the old NES was tough as hell, too. My roomates and I dig that up every once in awhile when we need several hours of frustrating, thumb-blistering, controller-cracking entertainment.
Back to Ubuntu after 2 years off... Why is it all gone from my head?

Ultima 4. Took forever to find the end, then when I did was either beat up, or computercrashed.
Wizardry. I spent hours looking for an ending. I may have finished the game (at least as far as it could go.) There was one enemy at the end that was similiar to the devil. Never could beat it. What was its name... ? hmm

Angband - never made it past 1500 ft I think, mostly cuz I start over again and it's SO hard and long
McMurphy's Mansion - does anyone remember this game, so awesome (in the vein of zork) EDIT: They don't even have a wikipedia entry for it
Out of this World - only one of the 3 I have beat, actually it isn't too hard once you know what to do.
Pirates! (The original PC game) - was their an end to this game other than having your crew mutiny on you/being forced into retirement?
