I do not use this, but it does look useful though, so I might give it a try one day.

I use textmate on my mac, but I'm searching for something similar on Ubuntu. Is this Vimmate still in development? I didn't found the package on repository..

I recently found Redcar, which is supposed to become a TextMate-like editor for Linux. It's still new and it hasn't been released yet, but it might be interesting to keep an eye on.

For people who have used TextMate, what does it offer that Kate and Gedit don't?

I've used e-texteditor, which is basically a Windows TextMate. I've found that gedit's got bits and pieces but not the whole package (though all the main things have been covered). And everything's also built-in, rather than having to look for third-party plugins (that might not be well maintained to the standard of gedit).

    yea...

Though none of that really bothers me; but if you want to know the difference, then that's it as far as I can tell.
