    The "Laptops-that-work-perfectly-on-Ubuntu" Thread

I'm getting a cheap laptop in July for Ubuntu, however, I think it would be good for people to post the models of any laptops that they found to be working out of the box, allowing potential Ubuntu users to know what to buy if they do go for Ubuntu.

PLEASE USE THIS FORMAT FOR WORKING LAPTOPS! It will make my life so much easier.

    [Brand] [Model] [Processor] [RAM]

Please note: If you do not follow this format, only the laptop brand and model number will be added.

    Re: The "Laptops-that-work-perfectly-on-Ubuntu" Thread

I was thinking of starting a thread like this. Thanks for starting it for me.

I would like it to go more the direction of your title (laptops that work perfectly) than your description (say what they had to do to get everything working), though. We already have a pretty comprehensive list of "what I had to do to get it working": https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptops

I'll offer, though, that a Dell Inspiron 500m (if you can get one used) works perfectly with Feisty Fawn--keys, power management (including resume from suspend), sound, screen resolution, etc.

Okay, that's a good idea. I'll edit my original post.

    Re: The "Laptops-that-work-perfectly-on-Ubuntu" Thread

For me it was the IBM R32 model 2658-BQU. is a good model. to work with I am running Feisty Fawn on it ight now with a new upgrade of a 512 megs of ram with the curent 256 megs that came with it already.got it free from work. my original ibm thinkpad was the iseries model 1161-11f paid $100 for that on it running either dapper drake or xubuntu on that one. And that one is already set to the max of close to 192 megs of ram on that. Both are great. Just need to conig the internal modem for it. WHich is a pain because they are windows modems. But once configure they are good to use.

Great! I'd love to have an easy reference for when people ask "What's the best laptop to get for Ubuntu?"

The hardware compatibility list is a bit much to wade through.

I've used Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude D600 since Hoary Hedgehog, and I've found that everything (except for the modem which I've never used) worked fine. I never had to implement any of the BIOS tweaks that are suggested from the hardware support wiki.

While using the Intel ipw2100 with earlier versions of Ubuntu necessitated manual configuration for wpa_supplicant, I've found that with the recent Dapper/Edgy/Feisty editions and network-manager-gnome, wireless is now just as easy as WindowsXP.

The video card is an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000, so I use the open-source ati xorg drivers, which I found was faster than the binary fglrx drivers anyway. glxgears (-iacknowledgethatthisisnotabenchmark) gives me 5000-5200 fps, after decreasing my colour depth to 16-bit from 24-bit and using these xorg.conf tweaks suggested on the sidux.com forums. Beryl is installs out-of-the-box with the Ubuntu Beryl Project repositories.

    Gateway ROG4500 with Pentium M 1.5GHz processor | 512Mb of RAM

Processor - stepped frequency works (600MHz - 1.5GHz), works out of box
ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 - detected and works out of box
Screen - detected and works at correct resolution. Had to configure refresh rate
Synaptics touchpad - detected and works out of box
Intel PROwireless - detected but had to install network manager to get working. Did not require ndiswrapper or any other programs
Sound card - detected and works out of box
CD/DVD drive - detected, reads, writes out of box
Ethernet adapter - detected and works out of box
