    How many have you converted?

I've been evangelizing like crazy and so far have been involved in converting 3 people from windows to linux
After messing with my computer for a while a friend who fixes all the problems with linux I can't decided to install it on his box getting rid of gentoo.
I also left a spare install/live cd set in one of the elevators in my dorm with instructions to at least check out the live cd and hopefully that found its way to a good home.
Thats my effort so far -after 6 months at least 5 people in Wyoming have Ubuntu

After years of speaking about it, I've had a fair amount of people try out Linux but not that many have stayed with it. The most successful cases were machines which I was the buyer for (2 in a school) so I installed Mandrake on them (a few years back). I tried warty on them but there were some issues with the longterm stability of them so I put Mandrake back on them.

Key point though: I wonder if I hadn't introduced some people to linux a long time back, would they be more open to trying it again now? Some now have a "oh - that thing that wouldn't work with most of my hardware" attitude which is A) no longer true and B) wasn't exactly true back in 1999.

It was pretty true back then. Let's be honest. If you had a cutting edge gaming machine, then you were probably going to have issues with Linux.

Even now, when you convert, you have to leave half your games behind...

I don't evangelize, but if people ask me about Linux I tell them I use it and answer any questions they might ask. I did "convert" my wife to Linux, though; she was heartily sick of Windows by the time she left Australia to move in with me.
My sole duty is to my own happiness and well-being. I recognize no other.

Re: How many have you converted?

I've converted three as well; My dad, who was getting annoyed at the stability of windows, and since he uses unix all day at work, he gets around a heck of a lot better than I do! I converted a kid who I just gave the CD to and he randomly installed it. awesome. and a friend of mine who has hated microsoft for years, when I told him about linux, he kind of started drooling.

It's actually real easy to convince people who:
    1. Are bored all the time
    2. Have an extra computer lying around

When people can try it out and see how stable it is; they usually want to try it out on their home machine

In other news, never show anybody the warty live CD and expect them to like linux... It SUCKS. I have yet to try out hoary though. The reason it is so terrible is that you can't get any new aps, and no computer idiot is going to be happy with the few that are on there. I give them knoppix, because then they get a taste of the software

I've 'sold' Ubuntu to three (ex) windows users. One of whom is not very handy with computers but finds Ubuntu Linux easy to use.

I've only baptized one into the Linux faithful - my younger cousin. He's a 'fire and brimstone' type Linux preacher now. I think I've created a monster too. Last Saturday he asked me what I had planned for the day. I said, "cleaning Windows". He rebuked, "heretic! I thought you don't dual boot anymore?! hypocrite! Forked tongue snake charmer!". I held up the bottle of Windex and he settled back down as the forehead veins receded back into place.

I've converted about a dozen so far (and I've even got a number of referrals to the Ubuntu Forums!).

None, sadly. Though I have tried. I suppose I should start carrying around a Hoary live CD so people can see how badass Linux can be.

When chatting about linux to windows users, point out the lack of worms, virus, spyware, browser hijacks, that are every day problems for XP.

Showing off some snazzy free software, such as open office tends to impress too.
