Now don't I feel dumb, but I just became aware of the Ubuntu Women Forum.
Well, from the beginners Team, WELCOME.
I think this forum is a great idea and I would like to see more women feeling comfortable with Linux.
I teach a Linux course and am happy to say women have attended and done well.
Several women at my workplace dabble in Linux, I have "converted" two to 100 % Linux.
My Wife is 100 % Linux 8)
Yes, women are welcome and do just fine with Ubuntu.
In fact now that I know of this section I will make a few referrals
If there is anything the Beginners team can do to help just drop us a line :

Oh, and I am proud to say we welcome women on the beginners team. I view the forums as fairly gender neutral and will admit I do not know the gender of each member of my team, but I know of 1 woman for sure (and value her input).
Live Long and Prosper.
